London, 1 July 2025 — GIST Impact, a leading provider of impact and risk data and analytics, and the Natural History Museum today announced a new collaboration to integrate the Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII) – a cutting-edge indicator of ecosystem condition – into GIST Impact’s suite of nature and biodiversity solutions.

The collaboration combines the scientific authority of the Natural History Museum with GIST Impact’s expansive database of corporate operations and locations. This delivers a world first: site level, best-in-class ecosystem health insights for over 98% of global corporates and millions of private businesses, tightly integrated with over 120 complementary indicators of nature impacts and risks.

Developed by Natural History Museum researchers, the Biodiversity Intactness Index is widely recognised as the most scientifically robust measure of ecosystem health. The BII tracks how biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems is affected by human activities – particularly land use change and intensification – and can robustly model future scenarios.

The collaboration enables users of GIST Impact data to more accurately identify and assess their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. It also responds to growing global demand for decision-useful nature data, accelerated by disclosure frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), and the Partnership for Biodiversity Accounting Financials (PBAF), as well as increasing regulatory and investor expectations.

Nature-related risks are translating into material financial impacts, because the entire global economy depends, at some level, on the goods and services provided by nature. The integration of BII enhances our ability to deliver location-specific, scientifically credible nature data and insights at scale, helping investors better understand and manage these risks,” said Pavan Sukhdev, Founder & CEO of GIST Impact. “We are honoured to work with the Natural History Museum to expand access to the most rigorous measure of biodiversity change globally, and equip decision-makers with the data they need to more accurately measure and value natural capital.”

Dr Doug Gurr, Director of the Natural History Museum, commented: “Given the scale of the biodiversity crisis we face today, it’s critical that we support investors in better understanding, measuring, and reducing their impacts on nature. We’re thrilled to be working with GIST Impact, who are helping to shape best practice on nature-based metrics in collaboration with some of the world’s leading asset owners and managers. Their expertise and global reach make them a natural fit to ensure the Biodiversity Intactness Index informs the decisions that shape how nature is protected and restored.”

This collaboration builds on GIST Impact’s strengths in natural capital valuation, biodiversity footprinting, and location-specific sustainability data and analytics.

Through the integration of BII, investors and corporates can now more effectively:

  • Screen assets for biodiversity risks across global operations
  • Identify sensitive or high-impact areas for risk mitigation and engagement
  • Model potential nature-positive outcomes from land use changes and strategic decisions
  • Assess operational risks arising from degraded or declining ecosystems

About The Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is a world-leading scientific research centre and one of the world’s most visited museums. Our mission is to create advocates for the planet – people who act for nature.

Our 400 scientists are finding solutions to the planetary emergency – from reversing biodiversity loss to resourcing the green economy.

We are seeking an additional £150 million to transform our South Kensington building: placing our groundbreaking research at its heart, revitalising four existing galleries, opening two new magnificent galleries and delighting 1 million more visitors a year with the wonders of the natural world.
